Background:
The South Asian Centre of Policy Studies
(SACEPS) emerged out of recognized need to build an institution
that would give distinct shape to the realization of a shared
future for South Asia. SACEPS was formed at the initiative
of a group of eminent persons of the region at the Centre
of Policy Dialogue (CPD) Dhaka, in February 1998.
The centre
was originally hosted by CPR in New Delhi, and later shifted
to CPD, Dhaka on July 2000. Since August 1,
2005 SACEPS has established a permanent Secretariat in
Kathmandu, and is closely associated with its national partner
Institute
of Integrated Development Studies (IIDS).
The overall objectives
of SACEPS is to promote regional cooperation amongst the
member countries of South Asia
Association for
Regional Cooperation (SAARC) in the field of development
research, policy studies and policy advocacy. SACEPS
hopes to promote policy dialogues and interaction with civil
society to provide a regional perspective to public policies
of mutual
concern, across these countries and also project a regional
profile for South Asia in the global arena. SACEPS not
only seeks to build business and professional networks
within
South Asia but also aims to draw together the initiatives
of the enormous wealth of civil organizations including
NGOs of the region, committed towards releasing a shared
agenda
for social transformation within the region.
Today, SACEPS
is a network organization involved in addressing regional
issues, and establishing national institution,
which can provide the building block for a South Asian
community.
SACEPS is designed to develop itself as a source for
aggregating the resources of all regional and national
programmes and
institutions, in the realization of a shared purpose.
SACEPS will thus seek to expand its institutional linkage
in all
South Asian countries and thereby broaden the network
of institutions involved in the process of South Asian
cooperation.
